Plenty of things are poppin’ off in Norwich right now it seems, what with the SHhhh collective presenting Bondax the other week, and 808 delivering New York Transit Authority (Mensah’s new alias) amongst others. Next up on the radar is 2084‘s debut outing in the East with a tidy lineup of producers (all bar Medlar are on their agency) who are gonna play a big part in the next generation of dance music, no doubt! Seriously looking forward to this – here’s a few bits to wet your appetite.

First up is Hackman. Going from his More Than Ever EP on PTN back in 2010 (still a staple in my sets!), through a bunch of top notch stuff on Shifting Peaks, Fabric’s awesome Elevator Music, Well Rounded, and most recently Greco-Roman and Audio Culture… This is emotive house music with an emphasis on bassline and good vibes. It’s an impressive discography and the crazy thing is that he never fails to deliver – every tune is a hair raiser! We sent him a Wizard Sleeve tee a while back, but as yet no snaps of him wearing it.. awwww! Give these two a listen:

Gerry Read, on the other hand in a whole new realm of house music. Well, kind of. Taking influences from detroit, disco, techno and a range of leftfield stuff that I don’t know anything about, Gerry is crafting his own pulsating and organic sounding house music. This is music for the dance floor, but with a melodic tinge and one of the most interesting production styles I’ve come across in recent times. He’s been snapped up for 12′s on 2nd Drop, Delsin & an excellent 4 part string of singles on Fourth Wave (another Ramp offshoot label). Gerry seems to fit very well into their aesthetic of ‘let the music do the talking’ and elitism. Check out the A side from the first in the series, and the recent 90′s Prostitution Racket out now on Ramp below. Oh yeah and he played a whole set of disco on the Boiler Room stream, wearing a mask of Jeremy Kyle the entire time!

Joining these two at the newly reformed Carnival nightclub will be the fast upcoming Medlar and Tom@RAMP (who incedentally is the bossman for Fourth Wave, Ramp, 2084 and PTN… serious!) for what is set to be a cracking night of progressive house music. Large. see you in the dance!

Rodney Hazard and Kareem Hawkins are two talented producers, from various parts of the US, who make music under the name HxH. The duo met at St John’s University in Queens, New York, and after discovering a mutual taste in music and production, they started creating music together. This EP of theirs, State of Mind, is up for free download on their site here. This 20 track EP shows off their wide range of styles, featuring smooth instrumental hip-hop, ambient textures and hints of deep house, jazz and soul. The amount of work that has been put into these tracks really shows, the album progresses really nicely and the attention to detail in each track results in a great final product. I’m looking forward to hearing some more stuff from these guys. Here are a couple of selections:

Here’s the only non-instrumental on the EP, HxH showing they have just as many expertise in writing lyrics as they do in making beats.

Keep your eyes out for:

WulfDen LP – This is their debut album and first full length LP, the date is still up in the air, but it’s coming very soon.
Pyramids In Stereo – This is the second project between Vancouver rapper Jason James & Rodney Hazard

In the near future:
Hazardous Raisins LP, Guns x Gold (OBSG Compilation)

OK so it’s been a while since we’ve kept our blog readers aware of our Chat & Mix series, so here it is. Three exclusive mixes and interviews from Ipman, Bohdi Glitch & Bwana that have been broadcast on our KaneFM radio show [Podcast].

Bwana has been exploding on the bass music scene recently – following his wicked ‘Over & Done EP’ out on wax for Infinite Machines, and a 3-track EP for Diplo’s own ‘Mad Decent’ label last month, there is obviously a lot on the horizon for this 21 year old Canadian producer. Just before Bwana, we had Kent-man Max Rushton AKA Bohdi Glitch in for the spot. Playing a wonderous selection of glitchy downtempo electronica. Not one with a huge online hype or following, but producing some absolute gems on his Soundcloud such that we got in touch, and low and behold a brilliant mix was before us. Check it out

Tracklist:

  1. Deft – Last Night
  2. Crewdson – Metal & Wood
  3. Zach Christ – Fox Prawns
  4. Rooflight – Shutter In A Box (Bohdi’s Remix)

  8. Bohdi Glitch – Eyes On You Ft. Anneka

And then finally we had Ipman live in the studio with us a whole 6 weeks ago to discuss the various goings on of his life, his involvement with ‘dubstep’s newest prodigy’ Killawatt, and what he’s got coming up on the horizon. Keep a sharp eye out for his EP dropping on Wheel & Deal very soon. Give it a year or two and Ipman will be a be a name on everyone’s lips, trust!

Norwich has taken a sudden jump forward, with a couple of really solid nights popping up – a lovely bit of fresh air from the D’n'B and student nights that have congested the cities nightlife for a good few years.

First up is SHhhh presents Bondax TONIGHT at Karma Kafe with DJ support from the Tropico lot, and live art too! [FB Event]

SHhhh have been doing great things for the cities alternative scene for a while now as an indie clothing outfit. Really sharp designs, coupled with forward thinking promo and big ideas – find their stuff in Dogfish Norwich & Cambridge, and online. This night is their latest offering, and is a bold move forward and the start of something special for sure.

Check out Bondax’s sublime track ‘All Inside’ below. Proppa 6am vibes. They’ve been getting lots of internet support – a meteoric rise of interest from when they started putting tracks up on their Soundcloud page only a year ago – nothing short of Dark Sky in terms of buzz! This pair (17 & 18 years old!) certainly know how to get things out there… Fresh off of an exclusive mix for Mary Anne Hobbs’ show on XFM, I’d love to see what they can pull out of the bag for a DJ set. If you’re in Norfolk. Don’t miss!

Members of SHhhh also run a night at Carnival called ‘Tropico’ – If you like your beats Hip-Hop, 90′s RnB, Deep House and UK Funky be sure to check it out. The next Tropico is on the 26th May – all nighter bizniz and well worth it for £3!

Following Bondax, SHhhh have managed to bag Fantastic Mr Fox for their second forward thinking event. FMF hasn’t released anything in over a year, but if the Evelyn EP is anything to go buy, whatever his coming will be astounding. Check him out in Norwich (I can’t quite believe it) on the 7th June.

Not to mention the ’2084′ and ’808′ outfits also with nights coming up in our fine city, billing Hackman & Gerry Read (25th May), and New York Transit Authority respectively (Tomorrow evening!). Also check out Nathan Fake at the Arts centre for the Spectro outfit. Seriously excited.

So why have a few groups of promoters suddenly decided to start putting on wicked electronic music rather than cheap drinks deals nights? I have no idea, but it should of happened a long time ago! Biggup to everyone involved, it’s only up from here.

Check out this fresh new track from Mosca whose productions over the last year or so have never failed to disappoint. His latest EP is forthcoming on Hypercolour and this time he tries his hand at producing bouncy and very dancefloor friendly house music. Watch the the accompanying video to the title track here:
